Most plants need repotting every eighteen months to two years. The signal is not the calendar, it is the roots: circling the inside of the pot, pushing out of the drainage hole, or lifting the whole plant above the rim.
Go up one pot size, no more. A plant in a pot much larger than its roots sits in wet soil it cannot drink, and that is where rot starts.
Water the plant an hour before you start. Damp soil holds together and slides out cleanly, and the roots handle the move better than they would dry.
Tease the outer roots loose with your fingers, set the plant at the same depth it was before, fill around it with fresh mix and firm it gently. Water it in, then leave it alone for a week. A little wilting in the first few days is normal.
